Abhyangam is a popular body massage in ayurvedic medicine. The word abhyanga itself translates into massage. In this therapy, special type of oil massage in which strokes are given according to the needs for about 60 minutes per day for 14 days. It is highly effective for treatment of obesity, diabetic gangrene (a condition developed due to lack of blood circulation in certain parts of the body).

This treatment is highly beneficial for patients suffering from insomnia, vatha predominated diseases, mental disorders, neurasthenia, memory loss and various skin disorders.
In the treatment known as Siro Dhara, a good head massage is followed by pouring of herbal oil in an uninterrupted flow from a hanging vessel to the forehead and scalp. The treatment is excellent in relieving stress and strain and generates sleep. Sirodhara also regulates hormonal secretion.
Sirovasthi
The therapy includes the pouring of certain lukewarm herbal oils into a cap put on the head for 15 to 60 minutes everyday depending on the patient conditions for a period of 7 to 14 days. This is highly effective treatment for curing dryness of nostrils, mouth and throat, facial paralysis, severe headache and other vatha based ailments.
While you go for Sirovasthi, you will notice that a leather sleeve of about six to eight inches in length is placed on the shaven head of the patient and a band (vartti) tied around the forehead to keep it in place. Kneaded dough is then used to line the inside of this sleeve and therapist ensure that it does not leak. Next, the oil is poured into the sleeve and allowed to remain on the head for a while. Physicians determine the time span for which the oil should be kept there. Sirovasthi proves quite effective for treating cervical problems, sleeplessness, migraine and other problems of head, hair loss and tinnitus
Pizhichil
One of the most popular and effective Ayurvedic therapies, Pizhichil involves the application of lukewarm herbal oils over the body by 2 to 4 masseurs in a special rhythmic style for about 60 to 90 minutes per day for a span of 7 to 21 days. The treatment proves to be extremely rejuvenating and is effective in ailments of nervous disorders, treatment for paralytic, rheumatic and diabetes among others.
Ayurvedic physicians recommend this treatment to cure stiffness and pain of joints and limbs, dislocation of joints, paralytic conditions etc. In women, Pizhichil treats conditions like uterine inertia in earlier deliveries and menopausal problems.
